Adventures with ALICE: To the Bahamas 2005

Migration time is here. Pulling the mooring and the arrival of hurricane season are sure signs. Bing Knight and Mil Kime are getting up the mushroom the day before departure from Deer Isle for Norfolk.

We fit the passage in neatly after Hurricane Frances's leftovers came through Maine, and won the race to beat killer Ivan's remains to Virginia by two days.

Sloan Russell, Josh Guyot, and John Buzbee were the all Deer Isle crew for delivery across the Gulf Stream from Key West to Eleuthera.

Queen of the galley, Sloan, with fresh caught fish in foil about to roast.

Heavy winds and lots of fronts made for a rougher delivery than usual. Alice didn't mind, but the crew wondered where all that promised tropical weather had gone. Here we are making 8 knots under staysail and a bit of yankee in 10 foot seas between the Berry Islands and Eleuthera.

.

We all used harnesses, and just watched her go. Alice covered the 60 miles in 8 hours, sliding into the calm of the pass into Eleuthera just as the sun was getting low.
