Adventures with ALICE: Maine Bound

Alice liked the idea of 1600 sea miles between St. John and Deer Isle. Bermuda is almost exactly on the way, so convenient for crew changes and so likely to have interesting boats in port.

We hoped for a better break from the weather after paying our dues with Olga in the fall. Winds the first days were perfect, we made 164 miles in the first 24 hours, only slowing down while Mil Kime reeled in a 3 1/2 foot wahoo.

We have found that a tot of rum in the gills calms down an anxious thrashing fish, but not the good stuff, please. What a delicious dinner he made, and wahoo salad for lunch the next day!

Miller Graves needed a ride home from St. John, so what better way than sailing back. She quickly adapted to life aboard, and proved an excellent sailor and a fabulous cook as well. Life on board was never better!

We made Bermuda in 5 days 7 hours, a passage of 850 miles, so averaged over 150 miles a day. Luckily what would have been the first tropical storm of the season fizzled out over Jamaica and didn't affect us at all.
